As part of the College Avenue Campus Renewal, Crosby Hanna & Associates completed the design for a plaza, installed in the narrow space between the College Building and Darke Hall. Because this project’s goal was to renew these historic buildings within the existing campus and park setting, the design and construction of the project required careful attention to ensure that existing buildings and landscapes were preserved and protected throughout the life of the construction phase. At the plaza, this required evaluation of existing elements including walks, walls, and especially, trees, shrubs, and irrigation. Preserving these elements were key to harmoniously incorporating the modified landscape into the existing, while respecting the value of the heritage landscape. The plaza design included seating walls which incorporated salvaged bricks and tyndal stone, an integration of new and existing planting, coloured concrete in a pattern that carries visitors through the space and connects the new and old buildings, and a raised concrete stage area to facilitate public events.
