In 2011, Crosby Hanna & Associates and CanNorth Ltd. were retained to examine the health of Wakaw Lake as well as to evaluate lake use and lakeshore development. Water quality, fish habitat, benthic invertebrate health, riparian area development, existing boat use, beach use, and public opinion all contributed to a series of recommendations that were intended to change lake and lakeshore management practices. Re-establishing riparian areas around the lake was determined to be the number one priority to preserve the health of Wakaw Lake. In addition to evaluation and delivery of recommendations, Crosby Hanna & Associates and CanNorth Ltd. provided practical methods and techniques for local residents to use in re-establishing their riparian areas. Additional recommendations included boat launch signage, a public warning system for algae blooms, and ongoing water quality monitoring.
